The bit that decides whether a driveway lasts fifteen years or three is buried under it.

Most failed driveways look fine for a season and then start to dip, rut and puddle. It's almost never the blocks — it's the sub-base. We excavate to the depth the ground and the load actually need, lay and compact MOT type 1 in layers, and only then build up. It's the least visible part of the quote and the reason ours don't sink.

Block paving gives you a surface you can lift and relay if a service ever needs digging up. Resin bound is smooth, permeable and low maintenance, and it goes over a properly prepared base or existing concrete. Slabs and porcelain suit patios where you want a cleaner look. All three need real edge restraints, or the whole thing creeps outward over time.

Drainage isn't optional. Since 2008 new driveways have to be permeable or drain to a soakaway rather than into the road, and we build that in — permeable blocks, resin, or a linear channel to a soakaway. It keeps you the right side of the rules and keeps water off your house.

About driveways and patios

Do I need planning permission for a driveway?

Not if the surface is permeable, or if water drains to a lawn or border rather than the road. Resin bound and permeable block paving both satisfy this. A non-permeable surface over five square metres draining to the highway does need permission — we build permeable as standard.

How long does a driveway take?

Typically three to six days for an average drive, depending on size and how much excavation and disposal is involved. Resin needs a dry day to lay.

Can you lay over the existing concrete?

Resin bound often can, if the concrete is sound and drains. Block paving needs the proper build-up underneath. We'll tell you which applies once we've seen it.
